At St Andrew’s history is an essential and valued part of our curriculum. Learning history opens up our children’s understanding of past civilisations, beliefs, societies, conflicts, cultures and settlements. This helps to broaden and widen their understanding of the world around them.

Intent Statement
Why do we teach this?
History is all around us. The study of history ignites children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Our curriculum driver ‘diversity’ has enabled us at St Andrew’s to develop and tailor our curriculum to encompass a diverse range of historical content. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children will begin to understand how the past has shaped the present. We also feel it is important to encourage our staff to demonstrate our Christian ethos whilst teaching History. History enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. What they learn through history can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values. At St Andrew’s, our intent, when teaching history, is to stimulate the children’s curiosity in order for them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding.
