Vision Statement
At St Andrew’s we value Music as a universal language of creativity and, as such it is an important component of the curriculum. The effective teaching of music engages and inspires children to develop a long-lasting love of music and allows them to discover and develop their musical talents. Music allows children to express their creativity in a variety of ways, increase their self-confidence and build a sense of achievement.
“Music education can help spark a child’s imagination or ignite a lifetime of passion. Music education should not be a privilege for a lucky few, it should be a part of every child’s world of possibility.” – Hillary Rodham Clinton
Intent Statement
Why do we teach this?
Our school drivers are ‘diversity’ and ‘wellbeing’; these form an integral part of our desire to teach music which comes from a diverse range of people, places, times, styles, traditions and instruments. We endeavour to give the children experience and understanding of how music can have a positive impact on their personal wellbeing whether it be by listening to, performing or composing. Our music teaching is interlinked by our school’s Christian values of respect, service, perseverance, fellowship, compassion and thankfulness.
We aim to enable our children to:
*Perform, listen to and evaluate a range of music.
*Learn to sing, create and compose music on their own and with others in fellowship.
*To learn a musical instrument.
*Understand and explore how music is made, created, produced and communicated in a variety of ways including using technology.
“Why do we teach music? Not because we expect you to major in music. Not because we expect you to play and sing all your life. Not so you can relax. But so you will be human. So you will recognise beauty. So you will be sensitive. So you will have something to cling to. So you will have more love, compassion, more gentleness, more good, in short, more life. Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living unless you know how to live? That is why we teach music.” – Unknown
